The Liberec Region
The Liberec Region is located in Northern Czech Republic bordering with Poland (Lower Silesia) and Germany (Saxony). The region is therefore strongly involved in cross-border co-operation. Euroregion Nisa was founded already in 1991 with the aim of promoting cross-border partnerships and projects. The Region with its 427 563 inhabitants occupies 3 163 sqkm, 4% of the area of the Czech Republic, making it the smallest in the country (except the capital of Prague). The capital city of the region and its natural centre is Liberec with nearly 100 000 inhabitants. There are 215 municipalities of which 36 are towns in the area of the Liberec Region.
Compared to other regions, the Liberec Region has a large number of people working in industry. Glass, pottery, machinery, textile, and plastic industries are all particularly developed. Tourism plays a significant a role in the Liberec Region - every year it is visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists who are attracted by the diversity of its nature. There are many opportunities to hike, bike, and engage in winter sports, particularly in the Ještěd area above Liberec, which will be hosting the FIS Nordic World Ski Championship in 2009.
In addition, the landscape is enhanced by many other places of interest, such as ancient castles, romantic chateaux and a unique network of stone and metal outlook-towers unmatched anywhere else in the country. Many towns in the region also have a rich glassmaking tradition and visitors can see with their own eyes how world-renowned Bohemian glass is made. |
